Insight Timer · Meditation & sleep
Most of the library is free. That is the whole idea.
Tens of thousands of guided sessions, sleep music and ambient tracks — plus a proper timer for the people who would rather sit in silence.
The model
Open library, narrow paid edge
Most meditation apps hand you a few free sessions and put the rest behind a subscription. Insight Timer runs the other way round: the bulk of the catalogue is open, contributed by thousands of teachers, and the paid tier mainly adds multi-session courses and offline downloads.
The breadth is both the appeal and the trade-off. You will find something for almost any situation — three minutes before a meeting, an hour of yoga nidra, a sleep story, loving-kindness, focus work. You will also spend a while finding teachers whose voice suits you, because there are a great many of them.
What is there
Six reasons people keep it installed
Guided meditations
A very large catalogue spanning stress, sleep, focus, anxiety and self-compassion.
Filter by the time you have
Three minutes or forty — you pick the length first and the app narrows from there.
Sleep audio
Music, soundscapes and bedtime stories, with a dedicated mode that dims everything else.
The timer
Your own duration, interval bells and background sound for unguided practice. Many people install the app for this alone.
Quiet progress tracking
Streaks and milestones, and on iOS it feeds Apple Health mindful minutes.
Groups
Discussion groups by topic, if the social side of a practice appeals to you.
Honest fit
Whether it will suit you
Likely yes
You want to try meditation without committing money first.
You already practise and mainly need a good timer with interval bells.
You want variety of teacher and style rather than one fixed programme.
You use audio to fall asleep.
Likely no
You want a single guided path and find a large catalogue paralysing.
You need everything available offline without paying.
You are looking for treatment — an app is not therapy.
Questions
Before you install
- How much is genuinely free?
- The large majority of individual guided sessions, and the timer. Courses and offline downloads are the main premium features.
- Do I need an account?
- Yes, the app asks you to register before opening the library.
- Is it good for beginners?
- Yes — there are introductory sessions and short beginner courses, though the size of the catalogue means some browsing at first.
- Can it replace therapy?
- No. Meditation apps can support general wellbeing, but they are not treatment. If you are dealing with persistent anxiety or low mood, speak to a health professional.
